Cook & Trainer 

Description:

We are looking for a cook to join our dedicated and passionate team.

In this role, you will be working as part of a team alongside volunteers and cooks in order to prepare meals ready to be distributed to homeless and displaced people living in Athens.

Alongside this, you will be teaching workshops for displaced people interested in learning about cooking, supporting them to learn essential cooking and kitchen skills to facilitate and boost employability and confidence in the culinary industry.

Location: Athens

Hours: Full-time/40 hours per week (Monday – Friday)

Start date: 22nd August 2023

About Project Armonia: 

We are a non-profit organisation acting in solidarity with displaced people to promote equal access to nutrition and education.

We were established in 2019 on the ‘hotspot’ island of Samos, where we operated a free restaurant that served over 1000 healthy and nutritious meals per day to displaced people. We have worked with a diverse team of 36 different nationalities.

Here in Athens we operate a social kitchen that cooks healthy, nutritious meals for distribution throughout the city and surounding areas.

We also have an exciting challenge ahead! We are in the process of developing a food-centered vocational training project, aiming to create a community in which we work together with displaced people towards self-sufficiency and integration into Greek society.

Role & Responsibilities:

Kitchen:

  • Cooking, preparing and serving meals for distribution (setting up workstation, mise en place, executing recipes).
  • Sorting, labelling, and storing delivered supplies/food ingredients according to НАССР.
  • Informing the Chef of supplies/food ingredients needed.
  • Participating with the Chef and the team of volunteers in the washing up of pots, trays, and kitchen equipment.
  • Participating with the Chef and the team of volunteers in the daily cleaning and disinfection and monthly deep cleaning of all areas of the kitchen.
  • Responsible for carrying out all allocated duties according to the kitchen hygiene and safety rules under Greek law, including НАССР.
  • Participating in kitchen team meetings as well as in organisational meetings as required.

Training:

  • Preparing and running workshops for the participants of our educational programmes ( content including: HACCP, mise en place, preparation techniques, cooking methods, kitchen hygiene and safety).
  • Teaching both practical and theoretical material to students.
  • Monitoring students’ learning progress.
  • Supporting the Education Coordinator with preparing students for examinations.
  • Supporting kitchen volunteers with practical on the job guidance.

Requirements:

Essential:

  • Proven professional cooking experience, minimum 2 years, as a Chef, or a restaurant Cook, or a Cook B.
    Fluency in English.
  • Strong understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures.
  • Strong  knowledge of HACCP, its implementation in daily operations. Knowledge of hygiene, and health & safety rules in a professional kitchen.
  • Ability to work within a team with a diverse range of backgrounds and cooking experience levels.
  • A team player with excellent communication abilities.
  • Relevant culinary and HACCP certification.
  • Ability to work well both independently and within a team.
  • Experience offering training or teaching in the culinary field.

Desirable: 

  • Very good physical condition, including  the ability to stand for long hours and to  lift and carry heavy pots.
  • Experience working or volunteering in NGOs, preferably in NGOs working with displaced people.
  • Fluency in Greek.
  • Experience working in a multicultural environment.
  • Valid Health Certificate.

What we can offer: 

  • A truly rewarding role as part of a highly committed team.
  • A fixed-term 6 months’ contract under Greek law.
  • Salary: 900 EUR Gross.
  • Work hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00-17:00.
  • Project Armonia offers 25 days of annual leave excluding public holidays.
