IsraAID Greece Programs

IsraAID arrived in Greece in 2015, initially providing emergency medical response and psychosocial first aid to asylum seekers arriving on the island of Lesvos, and additional psychosocial interventions along the northern border. During subsequent years, our focus has shifted to the long-term needs of the asylum seeker and refugee population within Greece. We now deliver sustainable, community-based education and protection programs that aim to support integration and build resilience.

Sindos, northern Greece

Together with our partners, IsraAID Greece has operated a community centre in the town of Sindos, close to Thessaloniki, for over two years. The centre offers a range of educational activities and protection interventions to support the social and economic integration of the refugee community into everyday Greek life. Approximately 500 asylum seekers and refugees, from across the Middle East and Africa, live in Sindos, and the Centre is also attended by community members from nearby camps, shelters and other accommodations. In partnership with IsraAID Germany, the Centre also accommodates an art therapy program, which operates in Sindos and in Serres camp.

Lesvos

Based on a six month pilot implemented last year, IsraAID Greece opened The Secret Garden Education Centre at the beginning of 2020, a non-formal education centre for refugee children next to Moria camp. The centre provides classes in core school subjects, as well as native language lessons, to approximately 70 children aged 6-14 from Afghanistan who live in the camp. Classes are delivered by teachers from within the community, who receive regular training. In addition, children are enrolled in a social emotional learning program and there is also a training program for parents, to engage them in the learning process and strengthen the children’s protection circles.
