DEVELOPMENT  MANAGER

(Focus on major gifts from Major Donors, Foundations, Companies and Legacies)

 

Reports to:                  Director of Fundraising & Communications
Location:                      Athens

Duration:                     Indefinite contract

 

MSF MISSION

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent medical humanitarian organization that provides medical assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare. We are a non-profit, self-governed, member-based organization that offers assistance to people based on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. Today, we are a worldwide movement of more than 67,000 people.

 

CONTEXT

MSF Greece was founded in 1990 and is a partner of MSF Spain within the OCBA (Operational Centre Barcelona – Athens) network. MSF Greece supports MSF’s global field operations as well as activities in Greece and Balkans region. The office consists of four main departments 1. Fundraising and Communications, 2. Human Resources, 3. Finances and Resources and 4. Support to the Medical Operations Department.

 

OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION
The Fundraising Department consists of two main pillars: Acquisition & Loyalty and Major Gifts. The funding of MSF Greece relies exclusively on private funds. This helps to ensure our operational independence and flexibility to respond at a moment’s notice to the most urgent crises. Since 2016 and with the decision taken movement wide to refuse to receive funds from the European Union, its Member States and Norway, in opposition to their damaging deterrence policies on migration, Major Gifts has become one of the key pillars to ensure the sustainable development of MSF Greece. The Development Manager will be responsible for leading the strategic delivery of all major giving activities for MSF in Greece, focusing on major grants form Major Donors, Foundations, Companies and Legacies.

 

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Deliver outcomes

·         Works with key stakeholders to develop and implement MSF Greece’s Major Gifts and Legacy strategies and annual plans

·         Directly develops relationships with the highest value major donors (individuals, foundations and companies) increasing their financial contribution and loyalty through a structured program of activities

·         Achieves specified fundraising targets, ensuring all short-and long-term income targets are met, regularly reviewing major gifts revenue and expenses

Planning and Organizing

·         Design and implement cultivation and solicitation plans for Major Gifts

·         Monitor field activities to represent MSF appropriately to funders through regular attendance at operational updates, debriefing, project visits and other MSF events

·         Collaborates with the communications team to ensure all written materials are in line, and fully integrated, with MSF’s key messaging, sensibility and ethics

·         Collaborates with the Acquisition and Loyalty Manager and Digital Marketing Officer in all aspects of offline and online fundraising that may pertain to major gifts fundraising

·         Work with internal stakeholders, returning expats and operational teams to engage with high value donors through personal contact and representation at events

·         Organizes major donor events and field visits, where required, and accompany donors on such visits

·         Reports  on Major Gifts income, analyzing trends and making sure opportunities for repeat funding are maximized

·         Coordinates with the MSF International Major Gifts teams to foster capitalization and experience sharing

·         Participates in the respective International Working Groups

·         Coordinates the creation and maintenance of the Major Gifts section on www.msf.gr

 

Analysis and Initiative

·         Prepares research profiles on current and prospective donors and develop and manage a prospect pipeline

·         Works closely with the fundraising team to  gather and analyze information about current and prospective donors from MSF’s database as well as publically available information

·         Identifies opportunities to integrate MSF Greece’s ‘above and below the line’ campaigns

·         Works with Communications and Operations teams, research content and develop positioning for  Major Gifts proposals, correspondence and  reports that serve to raise funds while informing donors about the field and advocacy work of MSF

 

 

SKILLS

·         Post graduate degree in Marketing, Business Administration or in a relevant discipline

·         Minimum 5 years of experience in leading  the growth  and  development  of a Major Gifts or similar high value strategy, with a track record of successes

·         Prior working experience in an NGO is mandatory. Field experience with MSF or other international NGOs will be considered a plus.

·         Excellent  planning and  organizational skills  with  a  proven  ability  to  carry  out  different tasks simultaneously and prioritize time and resources accordingly

·         Creative, innovative and analytical skills with an ability to think laterally in order to quickly identify new opportunities

·         Strong interpersonal and negotiating skills, with experience in building relationships with supporters

·         Excellent and engaging written and oral communication skills in Greek and English, French is a plus
